The Skincare Pyramid for Anti-Aging Explained by NUME-Lab Switzerland
Antiaging Skincare Pyramid
You know how the food pyramid shows the most essential food groups at the bottom and the ones we should consume the least at the top? Well, the skincare pyramid follows the same principle to help you design the best fitting anti-aging skincare routine.
The anti-aging skincare pyramid is a really useful tool that will help you to visually memorize the importance of each layer of treatment – starting from products used for prevention to products used to reverse signs of aging skin.
So, let’s dive right in and see how we can use it!

What Is the Skincare Pyramid?
The Skincare Pyramid is a concept for giving structure to an anti-aging skincare routine, starting from baseline products used daily to prevent aging skin, and ending in more potent treatments for reversal that target specific concerns like wrinkles or dark spots.
The Main Layers of the Skincare Pyramid
You can modify this pyramid according to your specific skin needs, weather and seasons, etc. However, these are the 3 main layers of a typical anti-aging skin care pyramid (plus the tip reserved for harsher cosmetic treatments):
1. Base Layer: Daily Routine
The goals of the base layer or the daily routine are five-fold – to cleanse, protect, moisturize, tone, and treat. In this first level are products we use daily to maintain our skin health and prevent premature skin aging.
Cleanser
A high-quality facial cleanser should be the first step of your beauty routine and something you practice on a daily level.
Cleansing your skin removes all the sebum, dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells accumulated in your pores throughout the day.
We recommend using a clean beauty cleanser without any parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils, formaldehyde, DEA, TEA, MEA, methylisothiazolinone, or alumina and derivatives.
The last thing your skin needs as it ages is exposure to more pollutants. So, we here at NUME-Lab Switzerland took our job seriously and designed the Deep Exfoliating Cleanser following clean beauty, Halal, and cruelty-free principles in mind.
Sunscreen
The next best cosmetic antiaging product that’s a MUST in your daily routine is sunscreen. And, not just in summer. You need sunscreen every day of the year when you plan to go outside. Remember that the sun doesn’t need to be hot for the UVA and UVB rays to penetrate.
So, we recommend applying sunscreen daily with a minimum of 30 SPFcosmetics
Moisturizer
Your next essential skin care product is moisturizer. Needless to mention, skin elasticity and hydration are real challenges with mature skin. And, proper moisturization is crucial to avoid dry skin and loss of elasticity.
For instance, check out our Advanced Renewal Face Cream with a completely clean yet potent anti-aging formula, thanks to Swiss Biotechnology.
Our cream is based on Snail Mucin Extract and it doesn’t just moisturize, it also treats skin concerns related to aging such as collagen loss, wrinkles, and dark spots.
Toner
The fourth product in your daily skincare routine is a toner. Some women like using it to regulate the pH of their skin, while others decide to skip it.
If you use all the other products on this list, you can choose to go without toner as well. However, if you decide to use one, ensure that it’s gentle and it doesn’t overdry your skin too much as toners are not really necessary for everyone, but they can offer additional benefits if you have a specific skin concern to target.
Here at NUME-Lab Switzerland, we suggest to skip it, if your skin is sensitive or tends to be on the dry side.
Serum
Next, we have the serum. When they’re well-formulated, serums can be an especially powerful weapon against aging skin concerns.
The job of the serum is to treat targeted problems. This can be fading dark spots with Glycolic Acid, moisturizing with Hyaluronic Acid, skin brightening with the help of Vitamin C, fighting wrinkles with retinol, etc.
So, if you decide to use a serum as part of your daily routine, make sure to invest in high quality.
Eye cream
Using an eye serum isn’t an essential step in many routines but it can definitely do good, especially if you suffer from puffy eyes and dark circles.
Remember that the skin around your eyes is sensitive, so we recommend focusing on Halal products that contain clean yet potent ingredients.
To avoid harsh ingredients, our Absolute Radiance Eye Serum uses White Truffle Extract, Eyeliss, Squalane, Buckwheat, Caffeine, Niacinamide, etc. The effect is instantly visible – reduced dark circles and no more puffy eyes!
2. Middle Layer: Weekly Routine
The second layer of the pyramid is reserved for slightly harsher treatments and procedures you should do once a week or once every two weeks. These are things like:
- Exfoliation treatments
- Face mask
- Microcurrent
Note that these aren’t treatments that you should practice every day since they can be abrasive and damage your natural skin oil barrier.
Exfoliating 1-3x a Week
Your skin needs to be handled with care and attention. Exfoliation can remove the layer of bacteria and dead skin; and therefore prevent many damages like clogged pores, acne, dull and dehydrated skin.
Our recommendation is the Resurfacing Night Peel Serum by NUME-Lab Switzerland. It contains a concentrated amount of Snail Mucin Extract and 10% of Glycolic Acid, which helps your skin resurface, minimizes scarring, fades dark spots, and stimulates collagen production.
3. Top Layer: Monthly Routine
The third layer of the pyramid is reserved for the harshest skin treatments with the highest concentration of active ingredients or the largest impact on your skin.
You typically use these routines once a month (or less) to target a specific skin concern.
The top layer includes things like:
- Facials
- Microdermabrasion
- Chemical peels
- Dermaplaning
At NUME-Lab Switzerland we suggest to visit on monthly basis a Skin expert.
4. Tip of the Pyramid: Annual Routine (optional)
The tip or topmost level of this skincare pyramid is completely optional. It includes invasive procedures that have a recovery time. If you decide on such options, they are usually done every six months to a year.
These are things like:
- Skin fillers
- Lasers or other devices
- Botox
- Surgeries
- Other skin contouring methods
With any luck, if you follow the first three layers of the pyramid, you should be able to avoid the tip of the pyramid and let your skin age healthily and gracefully.
Instead of this “traditional” tip of the layer, we here at NUME-Lab Switzerland prefer to care about skin health. So, for us, the tip of the pyramid of the annual best practice is a visit to your dermatologist for a checkup. Staying ahead of skin changes is crucial, especially after periods of prolonged sun exposure.
ALWAYS: Base of the Skincare Pyramid
Sweet potatoes, carrots, bell peppers, and other orange and red vegetables contain beta carotene, which is great for skin health and healthy tanning.
Plus, sweet potatoes are full of vitamin A, giving them the power of boosting collagen production and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.
Get Enough Sleep
Your body repairs itself and recovers while you sleep, and that leads to a long list of benefits as well for your skin. The key is to get enough adequate sleep,
So, how many hours of beauty sleep do you need to see its effects? According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should be getting seven to nine hours of sleep every night. If you’re getting less than six, you will likely notice the impact on more than just your mood but as well on your skin appearance.
Stay Hydrated
Manage Stress
Have you ever noticed that your skin breaks out more when you’re stressed? Or perhaps other concerns like eczema come out, or your acne becomes more visible? Either way, we’ve all experienced how our bodies respond to stress, and your skin is by no means immune to that stress! A natural balance must be maintained for beautiful and healthy skin.
