Exfoliators: A Guide to Skin Renewal by NUME-Lab Switzerland

The importance of exfoliators in skincare is immense, as they can help speed up the shedding of dead skin cells and help us expose a new, healthier skin layer. And yes, in theory, our skin should be able to do this process on its own. However, aging skin starts losing the ability for a quick cell turnover, so we have to help it out.

So, what is the best exfoliating treatment for aging skin? As always, we recommend using a clean beauty exfoliator composed of natural ingredients, following the principles of cruelty-free and sustainability

But, from so many choices out there, how to choose? Let’s jump right in and see.

What Are Exfoliators?

In short, exfoliators are skincare products that remove the top layer of dead skin cells through a physical or chemical process. By exfoliating your skin, you help it regenerate faster, and you expose a brighter and fresher skin layer with fewer imperfections.

As a skincare category, exfoliators can be anything – from serums to cleansers. As long as they have exfoliation, scrub, or peeling properties, we can call them exfoliators.

Why Should I Exfoliating?

Exfoliating is a crucial step of any clean beauty skincare routine for many different reasons:

  • Faster skin cell renewal and regeneration;
  • Removing dead skin cells, excess sebum, and dirt clogged in your pores;
  • Preventing blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts;
  • Stimulation of collagen to keep aging skin smooth and supple and decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles;
  • Help with hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and fading dark spots;
  • Improves the absorption and penetration of other cosmetic products;

What Type of Exfoliator Is Right for Me?

Generally speaking, there are two types of exfoliators:

  • Chemical ;
  • Physical;

Chemical exfoliators have acids like AHAs or BHAs that dissolve the “glue” holding dead skin cells together. On the other hand, physical exfoliators typically use different particles to scrub the outer skin layer manually.

Chemical Exfoliators with Glycolic Acid

Chemical exfoliators like NUME-Lab Switzerland glycolic acid serum can be much gentler than physical exfoliators. Glycolic acid is perfect for acne-prone skin and aging skin

To make our serum suitable even for the most sensitive skin, we enriched it with tons of nourishing ingredients like snail mucin extract, vitamin B5, and betaine. And, to add to its anti-aging effect, we also added niacinamide (vitamin B3), known for its skin brightening properties and its ability to fade dark spots

Physical Exfoliators with superfine particles, like microbeads, seeds

If you’re looking for the benefits of a physical scrub, we recommend our Deep Exfoliating Cleanser that has the best of both worlds – glycolic acid as an AHA, plus micro-sized ground walnut shells.

But, no worries, it won’t overdry your face. It’s suitable even for dry skin and sensitive skin types. We know how drying exfoliators can be, so we reinforced ours with allantoin and snail mucin extract.
