Acne: How to Treat Adult Acne-Prone Skin by NUME-Lab

Acne, pimples, blemishes, zits, we can call them however we want, but it still doesn’t change how annoying they are.

Acne-prone skin and you always may think about the teenagers.. Instead it is perhaps the biggest skincare concern that affects all ages and genders, and the worst part it can happen even for those of us who never endured acne as a teen.  Adult acne happens more to women rather than men and the Jawline acne in women might suggest a hormonal imbalance. Untreated acne contributes not just to acne scars but worse – a lack of self-confidence. We don’t want that!

So, how to heal acne permanently? We’re about to find out.

What Is Acne?

As a broader term, acne generally refers to a condition that affects the sebaceous glands and pushes them to overproduce oil or sebum, which clogs the pores. But, it’s not just oily skin that suffers from acne – every skin type does. There are two types of acne:

Non-inflammatory acne

These are just clogged pores without inflammation – blackheads, and whiteheads. They’re the same – the only difference is that a blackhead is an open and a whitehead a closed pore.

Inflammatory acne

Inflammatory acne happens when the clogged pore gets mixed up with bacteria and starts getting red and inflamed. Inflammatory acne as a group consists of these types of acne (from least to most severe):

  • Papules
  • Pustules
  • Nodules
  • Cysts

Areas Prone to Acne

Acne typically appears on your:

  • Neck
  • Facial Skin
  • Shoulder
  • Chest

Causes of Acne

Wondering what caused your acne? Here are some common culprits:

Hereditary - genes

Research shows that adult acne could be hereditary, at least up to some percent. Of course, that’s no guarantee that a child will suffer from acne if one of the parents did, but it increases the chances.

Lifestyle and medications

Medicine like corticosteroids or birth control pills can cause adult acne. Furthermore, a diet rich in trans fats, processed foods, sugars, and dairy might be an additional cause.

Hormonal imbalances

It’s not just the teenage years when people struggle with hormones and have acne.

Some women, in fact especially with jawline breakouts may find they root cause in a  condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Other women with adult acne can typically have it due to hormonal changes like menopause, pregnancy or simply due to birth control pills.

How to Get Rid of Acne?

Aside from eating better and living a healthier lifestyle, there are two other ways to heal acne: a skincare routine for acne-prone skin composed of quality ingredients or medication.

Glycolic Acid and other AHAs

Alpha-hydroxy-acids like glycolic acid will exfoliate your skin and help you eliminate all the impurities and sebum from your pores. If you have sensitive skin, try products that combine glycolic acid with soothing ingredients like niacinamide or betaine – such as our NUME-Lab Switzerland resurfacing night peel serum

Snail Mucin Extract

Snail mucin extract is another excellent skincare ingredient with regenerative properties that can help you deal with acne scars and discoloration. Snail mucus has tons of skincare benefits, so it’s a favorite in the K-beauty world (and ours – we added snail mucin to all of our clean beauty cosmetic products).

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that can keep your pores clean, but it’s less potent than glycolic acid. However, salicylic acid can be perfect for sensitive or dry skin or mild to moderate acne.

Vitamin A (retinoids)

Retinoids, Vitamin A are famous for acne-prone skin. But, be careful when exposing your skin to the sun or when mixing it with other abrasive acids like AHAs or BHAs.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C aside from being an antioxidant to keep up your skin health and being a skin brightening agent to help you get rid of dark spots, vitamin C can also reduce acne inflammation and help you fade acne discoloration.

Tea tree oil

The antibacterial properties of tea tree oil make it perfect for spot-treating acne and pimples. Although it’s completely natural, tea tree oil is highly potent, so be careful not to damage your skin.

How to Prevent Acne?

Aside from eating better and living a healthier lifestyle, there are two other ways to heal acne: a skincare routine for acne-prone skin composed of quality ingredients or medication in the form of face moisturizer or serum.

If you have acne, it’s essential to not over-treat and suffocate your skin with countless face cream products and harsh chemicals. Instead, stick to skinimalism and a clean beauty skincare regime – use as few products as possible – but with the best ingredients possible and global function.
